Why is social media marketing important for my business?

You're probably wondering why your business should do social media and what's the use of it?

The days are gone big boys ruled the market space yet social media has allowed the opportunity for small business to market to their consumers without the big budgets required, whatever industry you're in. Thanks to the internet the opportunities and possibilities are truly endless for small businesses like yours.

Let's take a look at the five reasons you could be missing out on if you're not actively on social media for your business;

1. It's free

First things first, how can any business deny free resources to accelerate their business. It's free to start a Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram or any of the other social media accounts. You can share with consumers, engage with your target audience and build a following without having to spend a penny. Several recent studies show consumers want to be heard, they want to feel valued and like they matter to your business. And I will be honest, you will need to dedicate time to trying to find where your potential consumers are on social media e.g fashion lovers hanging out on Instagram taking selfies and sharing their latest purchase.

2. It's not difficult, trust me!

It's not as difficult as it seems to do social media for your business you just need internet connection, laptop/computer and the passion for to learn something new that will benefit your business. It's just like learning to drive, learning to skate and theoretically those tasks are more difficult as it's something new to learn. On the other hand, you already know how to use a computer and highly luckily have a personal Facebook account yet you just need business and marketing skills.

3. Build a brand presence

Starting a business is easy but building a brand is a whole didn't story. If you're wondering what's the difference? As a business we need to aim to build a brand that means something to the people you're targeting for instance, Apple means to mobile users, Mercedes-Benz means to drivers and Chanel to fashion lovers. Steve Jobs and Coco Chanel started off by themselves and they didn't have social media when they began their journey in business.

It isn't about finance but it's about skills - acquiring support and advice, Not forgetting the vision to build a brand around your consumers. As a result, it's more important than ever to build your online brand presence

4. Competitive edge

With over 5.1 million of the UK's population actively using social media did you know consumers that engage with businesses on social media are five times more luckily to purchase from them? And consumers are more likely to buy from businesses that truly understand their needs than a brand who wants you to use their products by buying shelf space.

Global brands such as, Dove by Unilever who use social media to show they understand their target audience and care, that beauty comes from within. And Always by Proctor and Gamble who use social media as a vehicle to work towards gender equality. Both brands highlight themselves as more than just toiletries as they share an emotional connection with their consumers, as a result, it gives them the competitive advantage over competitors. It's not about the size of the business but how you engage with your audience through their chosen social media platform.

5. Be close to your consumer

Businesses need to see beyond short term sales but realise building relationships with their consumers on social media is now crucial for long-term business growth. It should be seen as a vehicle to listen, understand and talk to your audiences in the hope of getting closer to your target market.
